Johnny Cash's earlier and last public performance -- Understand Your Man
Here are two versions of Johnny Cash singing Understand Your Man. The first is when he was on the Johnny Cash Show in the 60s and the second video was of when he graciously gave when he sang at the ranch during his last days with us. Here's the first:
It never ceases to amaze me, the love this man had for music and his fans. Here he is doing what he loved and gave of himself almost up to the very minute that he left us. Thank you J.R.!

I
always loved Johnny Cash’s guitar picker Luther Perkins but I have to say that
I really appreciate Bob Wootton, and his words about the “sound” of boom chick
a boom Johnny Cash sound. I really like how he states that it’s “in the fingers”.

Thanks Jack for your songs that helped make the stars like Johnny Cash. May you rest in peace and may your songs live on forever!
Johnny Cash "There You Go" Listen to the Bass Lines ...
I'll be doing a Johnny Cash Tribute show for Women Rock (Anti-Cancer Fundraiser) and ran across this video in my research. The guy really has the guitar part down with all of the bass lines. And, looks like he's having a lot of fun with this.
Jason Aldean's "Johnny Cash" rocks and keeps the Man in Black alive!
I like the fact that singers are still keeping the Man in Black alive by mentioning him in their songs and even "building" their songs around the theme of Johnny Cash. I included this video because I think Jason has done just that. Also, I've got to wonder how Jason would do with my song I wrote as a Johnny Cash tribute (see YouTube video here).
Check out this Waylon impersonator, Jerry Allan is "Way" good!
This may be the only time you'll see a Waylon video on this Johnny Cash blog but this guy is a friend of mine and he's good! Plus, you know that Johnny and Waylon were lifelong friends. Watch this video and hire this guy to perform at your place. I told him that he's good enough to be playing every weekend somewhere in this great USA!

Where is the Johnny Cash Trail?
The Johnny Cash Trail:
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — The city of Folsom has completed the first section of the "Johnny Cash Trail" that will pay tribute to the country music icon and his 1968 album "At Folsom Prison."

The city is planning a $3 million fundraising drive to pay for remaining critical elements – infrastructure for a 2-acre park next to the bridge and a series of art installations along the trail, including a 40-foot steel statue of the Man in Black. While the city has used federal and state funds for the trail and bridge, officials say donations are a more appropriate source of money for the art.
Saturday’s ceremony next to the bridge will run from 9 a.m. to noon with a ribbon-cutting at 10 a.m. Cash’s Grammy-winning daughter, Rosanne Cash, is expected to attend the ceremony after performing the night before at the Harris Center for the Arts in Folsom.
The Folsom prison performance marked a turning point in Johnny Cash’s career, said former Los Angeles Times music critic Robert Hilburn, author of “Johnny Cash: The Life,” which The Washington Post has called the definitive Cash biography.

J Cash on a Moose Hunt and his To Do List: Kiss June
Wow, now this is an awesome (and not the same old stuff) article about Johnny:
“These incredible images of Johnny Cash hunting offer a look at a future music legend before he hit the big time. These photos were taken before his famous show at Folsom Prison, before he married June Carter, and before he struggled with drug use. He seems to be in his element in these photos. As well all know, time in the outdoors is extremely rewarding and relaxing. It is easy to see that Johnny felt the same way.”
There is also a picture of Johnny that I bet you've never seen before; very cool. Borrowing from the article, it was before Folsom Prison, before June, and before drugs. You've got to see this picture; again I say "wow!" See it and read more here.
Johnny Cash had tons of notes and scribbles everywhere; a sign of a creative person for sure! This article states:
Singer-songwriter Johnny Cash proposed to the love of his life, fellow country star June Carter, on stage in 1968, 13 years after first meeting her.

And, it shows a "page" from Johnny's "honey do" list, (just part is shown here):

Johnny Cash as "hot" as ever!
"The man in black is back" so says the Chatham Daily News!
Johnny Cash, the iconic bass-baritone country signer who died more than 10 years ago in a Nashville hospital, is as hot as ever and so too is the city he loved.
And what may be more interesting to some is the appeal of the country music city to a younger set.
DYESS HOME OF J CASH HAS NEW BIRTH

J Cash LIves via Young Thai band that plays Johnny Cash classics.
I was at a friend's house; he's from Thailand. So, he like Thai music and I like Johnny Cash music. I found this video and we were both happy! Check it out. Great to see young people diggin' the Man in Black. Also, the second lead sounds a bit more like Brian Setzer's stuff, but all in all, real fun. Check it out and let me know what you think in the comments below!
Wok (?) the LIne? Staten Island Rockin'?
Yeah, you heard right. Wok the Line. Wish I had sound or a video.
This article makes me remember an episode from the Johnny Cash show (I tried to find info about it but could not find any; if any reader can help, let me know). Anyway there was a man who was from Japan and was a Johnny Cash impersonator (of sorts) who sang Johnny Cash songs in Japan.
I think he was singing Folsom Prison or I Walk the Line and toward the end of the song he acted as if his guitar was not working. Quickly someone off camera came running up and checked all of the connections and then the guy turned the guitar over and said, "Oh here's the problem; Made in America!".
It was funny at the time because things "Made in Japan" had a bad reputation. Things have surely made a turn around today with Japan's innovation and workmanship have surpassed ours in many ways, but I digress.
Here's the article that had Staten Island Chinese Restaurant rocking.

Johnny Cash's "coolest" songs per Rolling Stone
I've mentioned it before in this blog when the car was for sale to the owners of Pawn Stars; it was a fun show episode but they didn't buy it because the owner wanted too much for it. It's now up for grabs again...
In the period he hosted his own TV music variety show on ABC, the Television Network ordered and purchased the 1970 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow long wheelbase Saloon in question they gifted Cash with.

Rolling Stone Magazine honors the Man in Black, who passed away eleven years ago this month, by highlighting his "coolest" songs, eleven songs; one for each year we've missed him. Check it out here.

Angola has a Man in Black Concert over the Weekend; good attendance.
Man in Black Tribute Act at Angola per The Sun (online) Newspaper:
ANGOLA — After a day of cloudy skies and forecasts of rain and thunderstorms in the area, the Angola Summer Lawn Chair Concert Series moved from its regular location in the village’s Centennial Park to the back-up rain location of the New Angola Theater on Aug. 20 for a concert by the Johnny Cash tribute act, the Man in Black.
I don't know where Angola is located, you can do a Google search if interested; I looked at the CONTACT US area of the website and there was no mailing or physical address shown.
It sounds like it was a good time for Johnny Cash fans and I'm thinking that being inside was more "realistic" environment for such a concert instead of being outdoors.
The article continues with giving more information about the artist and the band:
Taking the stage at 7 p.m. after a brief introduction by Deputy Mayor Bill Houston, Craig Wilkins, the titular “Man in Black” in the tribute act, took the stage with his backing band, the Less Than New Yorkers.

Johnny Cash & Bobby Bare - I Still Miss Someone; Two Friends at a guitar pull
I grew up on Bobby Bare's music as I did Cash's and here Bobby speaks of his friend Johnny:
"I'm very excited to be working with Reba and Loretta, but also because of John, who was a dear friend of mine," reflected Bare. "He lived right down the lake from me. He and June were godparents to my youngest daughter. John and I had been friends starting in 1957. He lived in California at the same time I did, so I used to go out to his house for a goat roast or something crazy like that. A bunch of us went out there, me, Patsy Cline, the Carter Family. We'd all have a guitar pull. Those things went on in those days. He was a hell of a man."

While watching this video, I sighed a little. With Johnny playing the alternating bass and strum on the guitar I was reminded of my early guitar lessons. And, his guitar sounded so "in tune". Enjoy watching as these two do as Bobby calls "a guitar pull".

Johnny Cash - I've Been Everywhere Song and Video
Recently I talked here of a play performance called Cash; Ring of Fire. The performers all did a good job and when it came to singing "I've Been Everywhere", they all took a verse; very wise. These are tough lyrics to remember and you have to get them all in there! Here's a video with Johnny singing them all and it shows many of the people in his life throughout his life. Enjoy:
Looking for the next “Garth Brooks”
I’m looking for someone to cut the song: “Me and My Heart”. Per
BMI.com on “how to find someone to sing your song” (http://www.bmi.com/news/entry/7_ways_to_get_an_artist_to_cut_your_song):
7. Consider collaborating with an up-and-coming artist.
A widely known “secret” in the industry is that you’ve got a much better chance of getting your song cut if you write it with the artist. What you might not have considered is that before Garth Brooks was “Garth Brooks,” he was just another artist-hopeful, singing demos around town. Given that the likelihood of Garth Brooks writing with an unknown songwriter is next to zero, why not find the next Garth Brooks and write with them early on in their career? I can’t tell you how many songwriting success stories have started that way.

I’ve
said this before but it bears repeating. Writing a song is a victory in and of
itself. It’s something you can - and should - be very proud of. However, if
your ultimate goal is to get your songs recorded by others, keeping the above
considerations in mind might be worth your while.
Good
luck!
I’m looking for someone out there who will cut my song: “Me and My Heart”; a country song and melody I wrote to honor the late Johnny Cash
and his guitar picker and legend Luther Perkins.
It’s doing well on and published on YouTube.
If any reader knows of an up and coming country artist or has
contacts with Josh Turner or Dierks Bentley, let me know!
PS. Please go to YouTube and listen to Me and My Heart (You can Google Johnny Cash Me and My Heart any you might find it elsewhere too). Leave your comments there as to which artist you think would be better suited to sing it: either Josh Turner or Direrks Bentley. Then come back here and take the poll on this page.

CASH Ring of Fire Performance (Duluth Minnesota) wows Friends of Luther Perkins wife.
Well I finally got to see the “Cash, Ring of Fire”
performance tonight at The Underground in Duluth Minnesota. Though it was
entertaining, it wasn’t what I expected depicted by the design of the poster which shows
a railroad track and CASH in the big letters that symbolizes the “biggest”
county icon who ever lived.
The music of Johnny Cash was indeed presented with some narration between
the characters telling a bit about the songs in a “I am Johnny Cash/he was
Johnny Cash/you are Johnny Cash/this is about Johnny Cash” type of theme threaded
through approximately 90 minutes. It was certainly worth going to if you like Johnny Cash songs and can appreciate them presented in a different style; like a cross between something heard in a coffee shop and the vaudeville comedy of the early Grand Ole Opry.
With this being the second to the last night of the performance, I would have liked to have heard the musicians a bit more “together” and hitting the correct notes more of the time. They were all versatile and each could play a little bit on several instruments, including the standup
bass, lap steel guitar, banjo, and guitar of course and fiddle. (One even played the “jaw harp” which I’ve not heard since the 70’s!)
See the cast by clicking here:
I did appreciate the way each performer altered the Man in
Black’s songs to fit their style, and add interest to the selected hits from
the library of this prolific writer which, probably made them easier to perform.
For all the simplicity of Johnny’s songs, they are not necessarily easy to sing
or play. Anyone who has sung some of Cash’s songs will testify that his singing
of some song lyrics is on the offbeat and his inflections so naturally fit
right “in the cracks” of the beats; and this is not easy. All of which was “just
Johnny” and would later become the elements of early and subsequent rock and
roll.
A wonderful serendipity for me was meeting the two people in
the audience seated next to me. Ed and Karen Jennings (no relation to Waylon;
and with her maiden name being Nelson was not related to Willie) live in Nashville and are
good friends with the wife of Johnny’s original guitar picker Luther Perkins. Meeting them both and conversing about Luther was a treat for me and now I have a place to stay when I visit Nashville! I told them about the song I wrote in tribute to both Johnny and Luther and told them to search YouTube for “Johnny Cash Me and My Heart” to find it. They said that Luther’s wife (who has
remarried and now widowed a second time) will get a real kick out of it.
Ed and Karen, you’ll remember that I said I would mention you in this blog. If you can’t
find the video, here it is:

Johnny Cash " How High is The Water Momma " and about his first guitar
Wow, here's a rare video where J C talks a bit about how he got his first guitar and wrote this song. As a songwriter myself (and a big fan of Johnny's work) I'm always interested in how one puts words to music. I think you'll like this. Also, I have to say, Johnny does pretty well despite the fact that (it sure looks and sounds like) he's playing a "cheap" guitar.
Johnny Cash - Big Rock Candy Mountain J Cash Lives!
Readers, currently I'm writing a song about a place where kids of all ages can go to experience the wonder of Christmas depicted in the world's largest display of lights. So for inspiration I went back in my mind and pulled out the memory of a song I heard as a kid; The Big Rock Candy Mountain. When I did a search I found that yes, the prolific Man in Black also did this song! Enjoy!

BARRY LEE BARTLETT JOHNNY CASH Song
Johnny Cash loved the trains and singing about them and those who were the "heros" of the rails. I hadn't heard this song and I wanted to give it more play. If you like it, place your comments below!
I invite you to also leave your comments at the YouTube video.
James Garner (and his band) does Johnny Cash Right!
This is a great tribute to the Man In Black and watching the
YouTube video, I really appreciate the tight sound of the band. Many bands “overdo”
this and play these songs too fast, etc. etc. It’s clear that they worked hard
to get the right sound. The lead player is true to the original. This band and
James does it right!
According to the review by Chicoer:
"I took the easy way, and to an extent I regret that.
Still, though, the way we did it was honest. We played it and sang it the way
we felt it, and there's a lot to be said for that."
Johnny Cash said this in his book entitled Cash. There are many people who sing the songs of Johnny Cash. There are few who are committed to being true and accurate to the Man In Black's music. There are even fewer who don't just mimic the songs but truly perform them the way Cash would have, himself.
James Garner is one of those few who have truly taken the music of the man to heart and made something that would make Cash smile.
